What you need to know

If you're visiting Kakadu and looking to cool off amongst some truly spectacular surrounds, Maguk Gorge ticks this box and then some. While it requires a significant amount of effort to reach - a 4WD vehicle is required to access along a long and bumpy road, then a 1km trip on foot that takes roughly 30 minutes before arriving at the gorge - it's a truly picturesque swimming spot. Maguk Gorge also tends to be less prone to crowding as some of the other more popular plunge pools in Kakadu, and the ability to swim right up to the falls is both unique and memorable. Surrounded by towering gorge walls, the water is refreshing without being too chilly, and plenty of fish can be seen swimming around within its waters.

While there's not much to do for non-swimmers, it's a lovely environment in which to laze on a rock and soak in nonetheless. To access the gorge, simply follow the well-signposted track from its carpark; the walk in is gorgeous in and of itself, with plenty of greenery along the way, although the end results in a fairly tricky climb down to the pools themselves on semi-slipper rocks - so those with mobility issues must take extreme care. Reached via a roughly 100km round trip from Cooinda, this gorge which gained international fame from its featuring in the Crocodile Dundee films is one of Kakadu's must-visits.
